Where I Live: The New Forest in "Old Hampshire"
With all the recent news about the Presidential Primary in New Hampshire, I thought you might like some details of where I live, which is also called Hampshire and -- in fact -- is the place New Hampshire is named after. "Old Hampshire" is located on the south coast of England and includes the port of Southampton, from where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in the Mayflower. But that 17th century event was relatively recent in the long history of the original Hampshire. The most notable event was a thousand years ago, when the south western part of Hampshire was designated a royal hunting forest. At that time, the capital of England was in nearby Winchester, just to the north. And the king, William I wanted somewhere to hunt deer. So he designated the vast area of forest and heathland between Winchester and the sea to be known as The New Forest. The idea was to leave the entire area free for the deer to roam, so the king and his buddies could hunt the deer unfettered by fences and inhabitants. So the few peasants who lived here then were told to leave. Any that argued were swiftly put to the sword. Today, a thousand years on The New Forest still totals about 92,000 acres of unspoilt forest and heath, dotted with a few small villages. As such, it remains a completely unspoilt area in the most crowded part of one of the most densley populated countries on earth. It recently became a National Park, which protects its wildlife and unique character. One most unusual feature -- a result of its pedigree as a royal hunting forest -- is that wild animals, particularly horses, donkeys and pigs still roam freely through the area, as they did a thousand years ago. This includes some of the villages and visitors are always amazed to see horses solemly feeding on the shrubs in the front gardens of the houses or strolling down the middle of the main street, oblivious of all the traffic. I recently made a web video for a client in Indiana, who was amazed to see the video I had used of a local gang of donkeys roaming along the streets and even going into a coffee shop (doesn't do to leave gates open, hereabouts!). They didn't get served, though, as they appeared to have forgotten their purses. Good luck to all at Qassia! Paul Hooper-Kelly |
